About Keyboards Teachers Users Visually Impaired Press Kit
The personal computer has been around for just over 20 years and it has revolutionised the way we work. One of the most important component of the computer is the keyboard, or as is often referred to in technical terms the main input device (the mouse is another). The keyboard allows the user to communicate with the computer. At any given moment, millions and millions of keyboards around the world are used to tap messages into a computer, in offices of heads of state and tents in the desert.

But…have you ever wondered where the “nonsensical” QWERTY layout of the modern computer keyboard comes from? Or why the keys on the keyboard are in the order in which they are?

If you are interested in the history of the keyboard, this section covers how the QWERTY keyboard came to be and the reasons why computer keyboards are so hard to use.
